Invitation to participate in the WILPF delegation to the Commission on the Status of Women- February/ March 2010Beijing Wheel of e words

Dear WILPFers,

The WILPF-UN Office (UNO) in New York welcomes WILPF members to come to New York City to participate in the forthcoming United Nations Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) which will take place 1-12 March 2010.

This CSW will be undertaking a fifteen-year review of the implementation of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, together with the outcomes of the 23rd special session of the General Assembly.   Participants will emphasize the sharing of good practices and experiences, and seek ways of overcoming the obstacles and challenges that remain. Attention will also be given to the Millennium Development Goals.  Member States, representatives of non-governmental organizations and of UN entities will participate in the session. A series of parallel events will provide additional opportunities for information exchange and networking. The General Assembly is expected to mark the 15th anniversary of the adoption of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action in a commemorative meeting during CSW.

We look forward to welcoming delegates to attend the Commission, participate in WILPF's advocacy with governments and to be involved in the various side events taking place. The 15th Anniversary of Beijing of course presents an excellent opportunity for WILPFers. There will be many places to strategically insert our messages, particularly those on the links between military spending and gender inequality, and we look forward to WILPF sections looking at this issue in their own countries.

We will be sending more information in the months ahead about our approaches to this year’s events.  In the meantime, if you would like to attend, it is important that you register as early as possible:

If you would like to participate in CSW 54, the Registration Deadline for the WILPF UNO is 4 December 2009. If you are unsure if you can come, register anyway. There is no cost to register. You must be a WILPF member to participate as part of the WILPF delegation.

SEND to:

  1. your full name;
  2. all contact information (email address, mailing addresses and phone numbers);
  3. Section and branch information;

Please also let us know if you need WILPF to provide you with a letter for visa purposes.

We have had several requests for WILPF to sponsor or arrange particular side events at the CSW and will be providing a form for you to fill out to apply to hold one of these within the next few weeks. Please note that WILPF can only sponsor a limited number of side events due to limits placed on the number of events per organization for which we can get space.

As more information becomes available (including the side/parallel events form), we will be developing our own web pages to provide it to you, so please visit: You may also visit: where WILPF members and their invited guests can sign up to participate in discussions and to collaborate on activities at the CSW.

Also for now, please visit the official UN website for more information: .

Please note that WILPF is unable to provide financial support for participation and will not be involved in travel or accommodation arrangements. We will however send out more information on logistics and accommodation possibilities in the area and encourage you to network with other WILPF members on options.

We ask that you arrive in New York to participate in an “Orientation to the CSW” educational event for WILPF members that will be held the evening of 27th February to help you make the most of your visit.

You may also wish to attend a special two-day conference for NGOs (the NGO Global Women’s Forum, organized by the NGO Committee on the Status of Women, NY) immediately preceding the CSW, on 27-28 February 2010. Registration for this event is separate and costs approximately $150/person; information can be found at:

Hope to see you at the CSW!
