Jane Addams Internships

Jane Addams (pictured to the right) was the first WILPF President and the first U.S. woman to win a Nobel Peace Prize. We follow in her footsteps by dedicating our program to develop young leaders.

Internships are on-the-job learning experiences for women with initiative and desire to enhance skills needed in a social change organization.

An intern in the U.S. Section WILPF office will work in an open, supportive environment, interacting with a staff of women. Because we use a participatory, feminist mode of decision making, she will learn valuable group process skills as well. She will have one supervisor, though she will work with other staff members and WILPF leaders, all accomplished in their fields. Interns are asked to work a minimum of 15 hours per week, ranging from ten weeks to one year, based on availability, project length, and performance. Our general term is 12 weeks. We occasionally offer stipends. An intern will focus on one area of organizing for in-depth experience.

Internships available in the following areas:

Dean Reed Program Intern

This intern will work with the program director to develop and implement national programs, focusing primarily around our four national campaigns. She will work with WILPF branches around the country, track legislation, use on-line resources, and learn the skills essential for any organizing work: communication and diplomacy, writing, effective use of time, etc. She will also learn a great deal about particular issues on which WILPF focuses.
Qualifications: Commitment to and some knowledge about WILPF's goals, verbal and interpersonal skills, research and writing ability, initiative, flexibility, responsibility, imagination, patience, sense of humor, and ability to see a job through to completion.

Leadership/Outreach Intern

The Membership Intern will be involved in every phase of the membership department. She will keep records, answer phone inquiries and correspondence and work with database and word processing programs on the computer. She will give input on how to bring new members into the organization, specifically by working with the young women's caucus as well as others. Everything she does will help hone her organizational and leadership skills.
Qualifications: Good organizing and communications skills as well as a commitment to social change.

Application Information.

Development Intern

This intern will work with the development director and other staff to fund WILPF's national political campaigns. She can choose projects involving coordinating National Board members' fundraising, appeal letters, major donors, foundation grants or planned giving efforts.
Qualifications: Creativity, commitment to WILPF's goals, writing competence, initiative and responsibility.

Our internships are available all year round and we plan with you what fits best with your schedule. We occasionally offer a stipends. An office interview is preferred and one will be set up after we receive your application. We also do phone interviews. Below are our schedule and application deadlines for our internship program.
