Past Time to Change Course in Iraq

The Women's International League for Peace and Freedom, US Section, has opposed the US led war on Iraq since before 2003, a war that has taken a heavy toll of Iraqi and US lives. Additionally, the sovereign nation of Iraq has been occupied by US military forces and Iraq's infrastructure, politically and physically, has been destroyed. The entire Middle East region has been destabilized by this illegal war.

It is now clear that Congress colluded in this Constitutional hijacking by allowing its authority to declare war to be usurped by the Executive. With revelations and developments of recent months, Congress bears a great responsibility to bring this war to an end!

Representative John Murtha, in his speech to Congress Nov.17th, said, " The war in Iraq is not going as advertised. It is a flawed policy wrapped in illusion....We cannot continue on the present course. It is evident that continued military action in Iraq is not in the best interest of the United States of America, the Iraqi people or the Persian Gulf Region."

WILPF agrees with his demand for ending the war and accepts his plan "to diplomatically pursue security and stability in Iraq."

WILPF urges members and all citizens to call on their representatives to bring this war and occupation to an end. WILPF calls for support to HR 4232, legislation introduced by Representative James McGovern that would:

1) stop funding for the deployment of US Armed Forces in Iraq
2) allow Defense Department funds to be used only for the safe and orderly withdrawal of all troops,
3) consult with other governments, NATO and the UN regarding international forces, 4) provide financial assistance and equipment to Iraqi security forces and/or International forces. The bill would not prohibit or restrict non-defense spending to carry out reconstruction in Iraq.

McGovern's "End the War in Iraq Act of 2005". Since President Bush refuses to take steps to end the quagmire in Iraq, Congress must act. I want my Representative to be part of the solution by co-sponsoring the McGovern
resolution. Thank you."
