Jan Maher

Jan Maher is a writer, educator, and co-founder and director of Local Access, a not-for-profit organization whose mission is to create learning opportunities in and through the arts. Her play Most Dangerous Women, co-authored with Nikki Nojima Louis, documents nearly a century of the international womenís peace movement with a particular focus on the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom and women recipients of the Nobel Peace Prize. Her book Most Dangerous Women: Bringing History to Life through Readers' Theater (Heinemann 2006) includes the full playscript, plus chapters for educators and community activists on using the play or creating their own scripts to educate and inspire.

Other publications include History in the Present Tense: Engaging Students through Inquiry and Action (co-authored with Doug Selwyn, Heinemann 2000), and a novel Heaven, Indiana (Dog Hollow Press 2000). Her plays Intruders and Ismene won awards at New City Theater's Playwrights and Directors Festivals (Rain City Projects 1992); Widow's Walk was a finalist in the Actors' Theater of Louisville Ten-Minute Play Contest. Her curriculum writing includes a Teacher's Guide for Ralph Bunche: The Odyssey Continues, a series of twelve video/DVD modules on the life and work of Ralph Bunche produced by William Greaves Productions; Northwest Labor History (published by King County Workers' Center); and Breaking the Silence: The Japanese American Experience (co-authored with Nikki Nojima Louis, published by Local Access).

She holds a Ph. D. in Interdisciplinary Studies from the Union Institute and University, and has taught theories of learning, curriculum & instruction, social studies methods and integrated arts methods for numerous teacher education programs in the Seattle area.
