Planning “Keep Space for Peace Week” October 4 to 12 2008

The U.S. continues to use its overwhelming space resources to both threaten and wage pre-emptive wars while it seeks control of both outer space and earth below. WILPF instead promotes space law and for the fifth year is co-sponsoring Keep Space for Peace Week with Global Network Against Weapons and Nuclear Power in Space nationally and internationally. Last year there were 17 WILPF events – this year we hope every Branch can report an action, whether ambitious or very small.

WILPF DISARM UPDATE has resources for your programs vigils, fliers, classroom presentations, demonstrations at AFB bases or aerospace contractors, contacts with Congressional (and Presidential) candidates, a new WILPF video and more. Read past reports for inspiration. WILPF Branches and members send reports, photos and copies of fliers, etc. to DISARM UPDATE for posting and sharing on our WILPF web sites.

Enews October 2007

Hello WILPF members and supporters!

Welcome to the October Enewsletter!

We are sad to report that our wonderful web designer, Dave Onion, is out of the office for several weeks due to an accident. The staff at WILPF would like you to know that we are doing the best we can without him, however your October E news is a simple and straightforward look at some of the exciting happenings at WILPF. We send our best wishes to Dave in hopes that he gets well soon!

Stop the Siege on Gaza! Tell Condoleezza: No Justice, No Peace!

The Women Challenge US Policy: Building Peace on Justice in the Middle East (WCUSP) Campaign of the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom, US Section (WILPF US) calls upon WILPF members and supporters to contact the State Department, the House Committee on Foreign Affairs, and the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations. Tell the US administration and elected leaders not to support Israel's use of collective punishment against the people of Gaza.

Enews September 2007

Welcome to the September E-Newsletter!

As always, September indicates a change of season, school begins, and it seems that activism is ramping up to end the War. In this Enews we have an excellent report that United For Peace and Justice has provided, the Peoples Report on the Iraq War. We hope you find it useful in your work. We also remind you to join WILPF in the streets on October 27th as we demand "Bring the Troops Home, Leave No One Behind." UFPJ has organized 14 regional actions across the country. Look for actions in your area. We have an Alert about the Jena 6 and ask that you take immediate action for justice. This case of racist injustice must not be allowed to stand. And finally, we say good-bye to Mary Day Kent, who has been the Executive Director since 1999. Words cannot express the deep love and appreciation the staff have for her and we will miss her!

IRAQ: The People's Report

costofwarUnited for Peace and Justice has produced an assessment of the situation on the ground in Iraq that contrasts sharply with the comments from General Petraeus, which barely mention the impact the U.S. war and occupation has on the lives of the people of Iraq.

Enews August 2007

Welcome to the August E-Newsletter.

As you can see, the dog days of August does not mean we are slowing our pace working for peace and justice. In this month of heat and draught, we ask you to take some time to plan for Blue October and to take action to Save the Water. We are making great strides with this campaign. San Francisco and Salt Lake City have banned bottled water purchases by their cities and municipalities across the country are promoting the use of their tap water.Great work! We also are working with our sister organizations across the country to join together this fall to demand an end to War, all War. October 27th has been designated as a day of action across the country and WILPF is working with UFPJ to organize events in regional actions. Please find out what is happening in your community and get involved. Finally, we have put a bit of music in this E-news. We are linking to Pink's video, "Dear Mr. President." Radio stations in the United States will not play this song, but last week, it was the number one song around the world. The song is powerful and we want to share it and thank Pink for putting it out there... enjoy.

blue octoberCelebrate Blue October!

Blue October is an international month of action to challenge corporate control of water and to protect water as a shared natural resource available to all. On October 31, 2004, the people of Uruguay voted to amend their constitution to recognize the fundamental right to water. Their Constitution now guarantees that piped water and sanitation be available to all Uruguayans, and it bans for-profit corporations from supplying this public good. Blue October celebrates this historic move by challenging corporate control of water through global action!

Start planning your WILPF event now! WILPF Water resources include water bottles, petitions, study guides and more! Email kzaidan@wilpf.org or call 215-563-7110 with requests for support, ideas and plans for action.

Take Action Now! Stop Mining on Sacred Tribal Land! painted desert

WILPF's Save the Water Campaign recognizes the fundamental right for all people to have access to clean, safe water. On July 24, 2007 Senators Jon Kyl (R-AZ) and John McCain (R-AZ) introduced bill S. 1862, the Southeast Arizona Land Exchange and Conservation Act of 2007, in the US Senate. A related bill, H.R. 3301, was introduced in the House of Representativesn  The proposed bills would grant land that is culturally, historically and environmentally invaluable to the Apache Nation to Resolution Copper Mining, a subsidiary of a multi-national mining corporation. Mining has contaminated more than 40 percent of the stream reaches of the headwaters of watersheds in the western U.S. (EPA, 2000), and the mine will exploit the already scare water resources in Arizona.

Right now the San Carlos Apache Tribe is leading the opposition against the bills, and they are asking for urgent and immediate support. Support the San Carlos Apaches and other tribes and the people of Superior by writing or calling your Congressional representatives, and letting them know that their constituents oppose these bills.

End Abusive and Improper Military Recruitment

counter recruitersIn 2004 – according to the latest available statistics from the Under Secretary of Defense – about 19,885 seventeen year old children joined the US armed forces, constituting 23% of all new reserves and 4.3% of active armed forces recruits.  These 14,933 boys and 4,952 girls represent a fraction of the youths targeted annually by military recruiters who have become an ominous presence in elementary schools across the country where students as young as 11 can participate in the Middle School Cadet Corps.

Enews July 2007

Welcome to the July 2007 E-News!

WILPF members are on the move. This summer is proving to be a busy time for peace and justice activism. WILPF members and staff returned from the historic first US Social Forum in Atlanta, Georgia, with a great sense of hope. Those of us who were there witnessed a social revolution being born. Never before has such a large (over 10,000) group of diverse people come together, spent 4 days together, and focused on what unites us, our common vision for peace, health, justice, and sustainable communities. This truly was "we the people" and most exciting is the agreement that this is a beginning of a progressive left working together to achieve our goals. We hope you will visit our website where we have audio clips, reports, and photos to give you a sense of it all.

Enews June 2007

Welcome to the June E News!

As we move into summer, WILPF members are busy working for peace across the country and around the world. In this newsletter, we want to share news of an historic conference in Mexico you probably never heard about. We are announcing the winners of the Jane Addams book awards. We hope you will enjoy the latest version of WILPF's longtime newsletter Pacific Vision, now available online. Our DisArm committee is urging you to plan now for the Hiroshima/Nagasaki commemorations in August and Keep Space for Peace week in the Fall. Our legislative action this month is supporting a piece of legislation being introduced by our sponsor, Rep. Eddie Bernice Johnson (D-TX) that promotes the US Congress to implement Security Council Res. 1325, Women, Peace and Security. To deepen your knowledge on 1325, Jessica Lee, a recent intern in the WILPF national office has written an excellent article on the state of Iraqi women through the lens of 1325. Finally, we hope to see you at the US Social Forum in Atlanta. If you are coming, please come by our table and pick up our schedule of all WILPF related events taking place throughout the Forum.

Save the Water!
Fast Track drains our democracy...

Defeat Fast Track Postcard Now Available for Download

Water is a human and earth right, not a commodity to be bought and sold. Free trade deals like NAFTA, CAFTA and WTO/GATS put our public water commons on the market for private profit, and threaten the availability of safe and affordable drinking water for all. The Trade Promotion Authority (TPA) or “Fast Track” process allows the White House to negotiate and sign free trade deals that deny Congress and We, the People, a voice. Free trade deals override national and local sovereignty. We need just and democratic trade that respects the rights of communities and nature.

"Don't Spy on Us (Again)

This past summer, WILPF joined numerous peace and justice organizations based in the Philadelphia region to file a Freedom of Information Request (FOIA) to see if our government has been spying on us. This action was prompted by revelations that the Thomas Merton Center in Pittsburgh had been spied on by the FBI and "Homeland Security." It has been four months since our filing, and no response.
