Sholeh Zamini made this statement during a panel discussion on Gender-based violence against women and girls in public and political life at the at the 53rd session of UN Human Rights Council. The statement highlights the persistence of discrimination that impede women’s participation to public and political life, such as violations of women’s and girls’ rights to health and reproductive rights, education, employment, freedom of expression, and movement. It draws examples from the situations in Afghanistan and Iran. The statement also recalls that gender discrimination can, in certain circumstances, reach the level of gender persecution, a crime against humanity.
