This statement was made to the 54th session of the UN Human Rights Council (HRC), during the Interactive Dialogue with the UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Afghanistan.
The statement highlights that widespread and systematic violations based on gender discrimination in Afghanistan amount to the crime of gender persecution. It also recalls that the UN Working Group on discrimination against women and girls, the Special Rapporteur on Afghanistan, the High Commissioner for Human Rights and several countries, including South Africa, have referred to the situation as gender apartheid.
Among other recommendations, WILPF urged all States to denounce the ongoing gender persecution and gender apartheid in Afghanistan and take decisive measures to address these; and to ensure that any engagement with the Taliban be fully informed by international law and by Afghan women activists, and that such engagement not be part of a move towards recognition of the Taliban.
