This statement was made to the 56th session of the UN Human Rights Council (HRC), during the Enhanced Interactive Dialogue with the Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Afghanistan and which focused on the report “on the phenomenon of an institutionalized system of discrimination, segregation, disrespect for human dignity and exclusion of women and girls in Afghanistan” (A/HRC/56/25).
Recalling that the findings in the report confirm that the large-scale, systematic gender-based violations in Afghanistan constitute gender apartheid, the statement emphasises that normalisation of relations with the Taliban is unacceptable.
As the talks with the Taliban in Doha approach (30 June and 1 July 2024), it urges States to fully support Afghan women and girls, prioritising their rights in any discussions about the country’s future and ensuring the full, equal, effective and safe participation of diverse women civil society and human rights defenders in the talks.
