This joint statement by the International Service for Human Rights (ISHR), WILPF and the Asian Forum for Human Rights and Development (FORUM-ASIA) was made to the UN Human Rights Council’s 57th session (9 September — 11 October 2024), during the adoption of the outcome of the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) of Afghanistan (fourth cycle).
Among other things, the statement welcomes the Costa Rica’s recommendation to “Remove misogynist restrictions and edicts”, and the concern it expressed at gender apartheid. It urges all States to condemn the situation in Afghanistan for what it clearly is: gender apartheid, and urges that there be consequences, based on precedent from apartheid on racial grounds in South Africa.
