This joint Questions and Answers (Q&As) document by eight organizations,* including WILPF, was prepared in connection with the 57th regular session of the UN Human Rights Council (HRC) (9 September — 11 October 2024), and addressed to all HRC members and observer States.
The Q&As reiterates the joint appeal issued on 6 September 2024 by 90 Afghan, regional and international organizations, including WILPF, for the urgent establishment by the HRC of an independent mechanism on Afghanistan, with a mandate to investigate and advance accountability for past and ongoing crimes under international law committed in the country. It explains the scope of the proposed accountability mechanism, and addresses key questions in relation to its mandate, complementarity with other mechanisms, including the UN Special Rapporteur on Afghanistan, and added value.
