This statement was made to the 57th session of the United Nations (UN) Human Rights Council (9 September — 11 October 2024), during the “Enhanced interactive dialogue on the OHCHR report on the situation of human rights in Afghanistan and the oral update by the Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Afghanistan.”
The statement highlights the worsening crisis in Afghanistan, emphasising systemic gender persecution, the urgent need for accountability, and the international community’s duty to ensure Afghan women’s participation on any talks about their country. With ongoing gender apartheid in the country, the statement stresses the need to ensure that any engagement with the Taliban does not to normalise their oppression.
The statement also calls for transparent humanitarian aid distribution and ongoing, flexible, direct funding for women-led organisations.
