WILPF made this statement to the UN Human Rights Council’s 57th session (9 September — 11 October 2024) in connection with the report of the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) on the “Impact of arms transfers on human rights” (A/HRC/56/42), which has a focus on access to information.
In the statement, WILPF recalls that right to seek and receive information is central to ensuring public oversight on arms transfers, including by parliaments and the judiciary, and to access to justice for victims of violations caused or facilitated by weapons. Among other things, WILPF echoes the OHCHR’s recommendation to States to make sufficient information publicly available in accessible formats to ensure public oversight on arms transfers. Similarly, WILPF stresses that the arms sector must provide transparent information.
WILPF also recalls the critical role played by civil society in public oversight of arms exports and stresses the need to protect the rights of all those who expose how weapons fuel human rights violations and abuses.
