This statement was made during the Enhanced interactive dialogue on human rights situation in Afghanistan of the UN Human Rights Council, 58th session (24 February to 4 April 2025).
The statement recalls that the law on the Promotion of Virtue and the Prevention of Vice provides further evidence of the pattern of large-scale systematic violations of women’s and girls’ rights in Afghanistan, which constitutes gender persecution and an institutionalised framework of gender apartheid.
It draws attention to the grave situation of asylum seekers awaiting resettlement in Pakistan and Iran.
It calls on all states to stop the normalisation of women’s rights violations and denounce gender apartheid in Afghanistan; support accountability efforts, including at the International Criminal Court (ICC) and at the International Court of Justice (ICJ); support the creation of an independent accountability mechanism to investigate, collect, analyse, and preserve evidence of grave violations and abuses in Afghanistan.
