Dear Emeritus Professor Gillian Triggs, Commissioner and President, Australian Human Rights Commission
The Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom, Australian Section, sends its greetings and solidarity to you and the Australian Human Rights Commission (AHRC) in its 100th anniversary year.
We admire and support the work of AHRC and protest the personal attacks on you, and on the organisation, by government ministers. Our members will inform their elected representatives of our concern for the human rights violations by the government and the mistreatment of those who speak out in defence of human rights.
The promotion of human rights and access to them by all people is a prominent and ongoing campaign for our organisation. Globally, WILPF promotes human rights as the essential underpinning of all peace and freedom, and the necessary framework for all international relations. We are part of the current movement in Queensland to have a Human Rights Act legislated, and in turn to generate support for a national Human Rights Act.
Thank you for your courageous defence of international law and universal human rights in the face of such wrongful behaviour by a number of government ministers.
Yours in peace,
Maree Klemm
