The Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom (WILPF) International Board, as a particular response to the initiative of the WILPF Sections in Pakistan, the United States, and the United Kingdom,
Condemning the drone attacks by the United States that have killed or maimed over 4,000 people, mostly inside Pakistan, including women, men, girls, boys and the elderly,
Recognizing that the use of armed drones, remotely controlled from various locations in the United States (and reportedly other countries, including the United Kingdom) in order to conduct acts of “targeted killing” without due process, clearly violates international law and human rights,
Deploring that the conduct of the US-led “war on terror” is aimed at minimizing the loss of US soldiers while killing civilians of other countries without any accountability is in violation of all rules of engagement with another sovereign state,
Arguing that this unilateral approach is promoting a culture of superiority by one nation while degrading international law, including international humanitarian law and universally agreed human rights standards,
Welcoming the March 2012 report of the UN Special Rapporteur on extrajudicial, summary or arbitrary executions focusing (A/HRC/20/22/Add.3), which expressed “serious concern” with the US practice of targeted killing, including through armed drone attacks,
- Condemns the use of armed drones in Pakistan and any other country;
- Calls on all countries to stop manufacturing, using, and deploying, armed drones;
- Demands the US government clarify its procedures for determining how its drone strikes are in compliance with international humanitarian law and human rights, and that it publish gender-disaggregated data on casualties of its drone attacks in Pakistan and other countries; and
- Calls on WILPF Sections and other civil society and international organizations to condemn and protest against armed drones.
