The following is a statement by an active group of Yemeni civil society organizations and activists
after the decision of the Saudi-led Arab coalition to close all land, sea and air ports of Yemen.
Despite all the warnings of the catastrophic humanitarian situation in Yemen, this decision was
adopted and will exacerbate the already dire situation. Before the war, the country imported
around 90% of its food and with the blockage of all the ports; food, medicine and fuel will be
“luxurious” commodities out of reach to more than 7 million Yemeni on the brink of starvation.
WILPF will continue supporting the efforts of civil society organizations especially those
women-led, and we highly condemn the coalition’s decision in using collective punishment as a
means to achieve its ends.
