WILPF submitted this report to the Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (CESCR) for its review of France taking place at the 74th session (25 September – 13 October 2023).
The report is based on a WILPF submission to the fourth Universal Periodic Review of France that outlines the long-lasting human rights impacts of France’s past nuclear testing in Algeria and French Polynesia, and the disproportionate use of force by French police. With regard to the latter and in the context of the unlawful killing of 17-year-old Nahel M. on 27 June 2023, WILPF included new information regarding the expansion of police use of firearms by Article L.435-1 to the Internal Security Code introduced in 2017, and the systemic racial discrimination within the police.
