About: World BEYOND War is organising a Global Day of Education to raise awareness about military bases.

Military bases are part of the disastrous global increase in spending on wars and preparations for wars. This increased militarism makes wars more likely, and the most likely targets are bases. Military bases are often the worst environmental disaster sites, polluting air, soil, and water.

Foreign bases are often mini-apartheid states with second-class status for locals and criminal immunity for militaries — a situation that can often be traced back to stolen land and other injustices. From Panama to Guam to Puerto Rico to Okinawa to dozens of other locations across the world, militaries have taken valuable land from local populations, often pushing out Indigenous people in the process, without their consent and without reparations.

But we know change is possible. Through public pressure, bases have been closed and plans for new ones blocked. When converted, bases can become success stories — restoring land, supporting local communities, and creating opportunities for small businesses.

How to participate or follow: You can:

  • Hold an event to mark the Global Day, focusing on the global problem and what people can do locally and in solidarity with others.
  • Highlight a base near you and its impacts.
  • Focus on a specific issue, such as how bases enable lawless kidnappings and deportations, disappearances and torture, environmental destruction, or restrictions on people’s ability to self-govern.
