The Young WILPF Network, in collaboration with the WILPF Environment Working Group, organised the Young WILPF Forum to celebrate International Youth Day 2023. The forum aimed to recognise and lift the remarkable contributions of young people in climate action and conflict prevention. It showcased the inspiring achievements, stories, and initiatives of Young WILPF members dedicated to creating a more peaceful, feminist, and environmentally sustainable world.
During the Forum, Michelle Benzing (WILPF Germany), Edwick Madzimure (WILPF Zimbabwe), and Olla Alsakkaf (WILPF Yemen) addressed questions regarding green skills and youth leadership. Olla specifically addressed green skills in conflict settings, such as Yemen. She underscored the importance of applying activism everywhere and in different contexts, including in countries in conflict and post-conflict situations. Meanwhile, Edwick said, “the environment is us, and we are the environment.” Furthermore, Edwick highlighted the importance of educating young people to address and mitigate the climate crisis. Finally, Michelle mentioned the role WILPF plays by drawing the connections between the climate crisis with other forms and systems of oppression such as patriarchy, capitalism, colonialism, and militarism. During the second half of the Forum, participants gathered in breakout groups to brainstorm ideas and share their lived experiences regarding conflict prevention and green skills.
