With the indefinite postponement of the 24 December 2021 elections, Libya is once again at a political stalemate. The institutional vacuum serves as a fertile ground for armed groups to continue to commit human rights abuses with complete impunity. In this context, the systematic crackdown on civil society by all parties in Libya has escalated at an alarming rate. This environment of impunity, fear, and intimidation further threatens the political process and the legitimacy of any upcoming elections. It is critical that the FFM be renewed at the 50th Session of the HRC for a minimum of one year. In this context, experts will discuss the role of the UN Fact-Finding Mission in supporting the rule of law and sustainable peace.
