SUMMARY:Fossil Fuels\, Militarism\, and the Path to Peace: A Feminist Just Transition
DESCRIPTION:Host/event owner/convener: Heinrich Böll Foundation and organised by Peace Boat\, the Fossil Fuel Treaty Initiative\, the Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom (WILPF)\, LIMPAL Colombia and the Conflict and Environment Observatory (CEOBS). \n\n\n\nOpen to: (public\, WILPF members\, or closed meeting to a specific group for example IB) \n\n\n\nWhen? 28 April 2026; 10:15am-12pm \n\n\n\nWhere? Hilton Garden Hotel\, Salon Aquabahia\, Cra. 1c #24-04\, Comuna 2\, Santa Marta \n\n\n\nEvent type: In-person / Online \n\n\n\nAbout: Taking place on the margins of the First International Conference on the Just Transition Away from Fossil Fuels in Santa Marta\, this event will explore the links between fossil fuels and militarism and why demilitarisation is essential to a just transition. Military systems are major yet often overlooked drivers of emissions\, while absorbing vast public resources that could instead support climate solutions\, adaptation\, and community resilience. \n\n\n\nBringing together experts\, activists\, and grassroots perspectives\, the discussion will centre feminist and gender-just approaches to security\, highlighting how militarism and fossil fuel extraction reinforce inequality and disproportionately impact women and marginalised communities. It will examine the urgent need to shift resources away from military spending toward a fair energy transition\, and explore how the Fossil Fuel Treaty can serve not only as a climate framework but as a pathway to peace by addressing the root causes of conflict and enabling a global\, just phase-out of fossil fuels. \n\n\n\nThe event will also feature the launch of a new report by WILPF and the Fossil Fuel Treaty\, The Double Dividend: How Reducing Military Spending Can Finance a Just Transition. The Fossil Fuel Treaty as a Tool for Justice and Peace. This event is part of the Global Days of Action on Military Spending.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHow to participate or follow: In-person places are limited. Please register for in-person attendance HERE.  The event will be livestreamed and available as a Zoom webinar. Registration details and links will be available shortly. \n\n\n\nThe event will take place in Spanish and English\, with simultaneous interpretation.
