Redefining Security During and After War: Women, Civilian Protection, and Lebanon’s Transition

About: Lebanon is facing a critical moment following years of escalating conflict, including the 2024 and 2026 military escalations, which have deeply affected communities across the country. While a ceasefire has been declared, many civilians continue to experience insecurity, uncertainty, displacement-related challenges, and unresolved protection concerns. This session explores the human impact of war through a feminist peace lens, including women’s experiences and leadership, humanitarian responses, environmental destruction and climate impacts, weapons-related harm, and the challenges of recovery and reconstruction.

Looking beyond the ceasefire, the session examines Lebanon’s evolving transition, including emerging negotiation tracks, changing security arrangements, the future role of UNIFIL, and efforts to strengthen civilian protection. Bringing together perspectives from humanitarian action, climate justice, and peacebuilding, the session highlights that women’s participation must go beyond presence at the table: women must shape the analysis, priorities, and decisions informing negotiations, recovery, and sustainable peace.
