Today, the importance of social justice is clearer than ever, as we see the consequences of its erosion around the world. From Afghanistan, where accountability for gender apartheid is a pre-requisite to reinstate the rights of women and girls, to established democracies, where systemic inequality is fuelling increasing disregard for human rights and basic needs.
Robust demands for inclusive policies and strong social protection systems are essential to combat the manipulation of institutions that exacerbate systemic inequality. The increasing willingness to override basic rule of law, both domestically and internationally, can only be challenged by solidarity, courage and commitment.
Today, we are witnessing how the absence of war and violence does not deliver social justice, nor inclusive and sustainable peace.
At WILPF, we believe peace is only possible when societies are just, equal and inclusive: that is, when social justice is the norm, not the exception. When institutions and power are being used to undermine social justice, communities of all sizes need to mobilise, coordinate, and strategise together, because only in solidarity can we collectively challenge these dangerous trends.
Today is both a reminder of all that we stand to lose, and of the importance of collective and strategic action to fight for social justice.
There can be no peace without justice.
