Syria – Support Syrian Women’s Political Movement
The conflict in Syria is one of the worst humanitarian crises in the world today. Peace talks have begun – and failed. Throughout the process, women and grassroots activists have been largely excluded from the negotiations, undermining the prospect of finding a sustainable solution.
In 2017, a group of Syrian women politicians and activists formed the Syrian Women Political Movement (SWPM) to address this situation. They come from diverse backgrounds, but they all shared a vision of an inclusive peace process and a democratic Syrian state that grants women and men equal rights, without discrimination.
WILPF provides support for the SWPM in its efforts towards a just and inclusive Syria. We help build the movement’s structure and strengthen its organisational capacity. We also provide the feminist expertise, the connections and the structure to foster the movement’s engagement with women inside Syria and in Diaspora, to bring their voices and inputs to the political process. We also support the movement to grow links within the feminist community in Syria and globally.
