The New Agenda for Peace offers recommendations to prepare for the 2024 Summit of the Future, focused on reinvigorating the multilateral system and addressing global governance challenges. This summit aims to tackle the UN’s 75+ years of challenges and prepare for the next 75 years, presenting an opportunity to address longstanding criticisms of the UN’s functioning.
Notably, the agenda prioritises conflict prevention and introduces progressive language on dismantling patriarchal power structures, making it a significant platform to advocate for feminist perspectives on peace. What else should we know?
What the New Agenda for Peace says:
“As generational gains in women’s rights hang in the balance around the world, so does the transformative potential of the women and peace and security agenda. Incrementalism has not worked and the realisation of the agenda in its entirety is urgent. More political will is required. Precipitating women’s meaningful participation in all decision-making, eradicating all forms of violence against women, both online and offline, and upholding women’s rights would not just help shift power, but also result in giant steps forward in sustaining peace.”
A New Agenda for Peace, pg. 20
The New Agenda for Peace offers a unique opportunity to advance gender equality, dismantle patriarchal power structures, and promote lasting peace. WILPF has played a pivotal role in shaping this agenda through its antimilitarist feminist approach to the Women, Peace and Security (WPS) agenda.
Our recommendations are a call to action for member states and the UN system. They emphasise the importance of weaving gender equality into all aspects of peace and security efforts, even in areas where it’s not explicitly mentioned in the text (see quote above). The urgency of this agenda cannot be overstated, especially at a time when the foundations of multilateralism are being questioned.
