From 1915
On this day in 1915, while the First World War raged in Europe, 1,136 peace activists crossed borders to meet in The Hague. United by a belief that peace was possible and that women must have a say in shaping it, they laid the foundation for what would become the Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom (WILPF). From the beginning, our work has been rooted in resisting war, challenging injustice and systems of oppression and building new ways of living together through solidarity and care. Until Today
Now, in 2025, WILPF marks 110 years of feminist peace activism. But this anniversary is not business as usual. We are in a time of profound urgency. The multilateral system that WILPF has helped shape for over a century and that still holds potential as one of the few spaces for mediation and dialogue – is under immense strain. Civil society voices are being pushed out. Military budgets are rising while funding for peace and justice is cut. The pillars of human rights, care and international cooperation are cracking.
But we also see something else: clarity about what matters most. About what we must protect, what needs to change and what we must collectively let go of. This year, we’re launching “WILPF Then and Now,” a yearlong campaign not only to honour our legacy, but to reflect, mobilise and strengthen our movement in these challenging times. The values that brought us together in 1915 – peace, justice, equality and solidarity are still here. So are we.
A Message from WILPF’s Secretary-General, Amrita Kapur, and International President, Sylvie Ndongmo

This campaign is an invitation. A call to reflect deeply on today’s challenges, meet them with courage and act with radical intention. In a time when civil society is being silenced and spaces for peace are shrinking, we are reminded of the power of collective action. Our strength lies in connection, in solidarity and in refusing to give up on the future we believe in. Let’s come together, not just to remember, but to reimagine. Let’s raise our voices with clarity, care and solidarity. Let’s mobilise for feminist peace, then and now.
