Ukraine: Strengthen Women’s Role in Local Peace Efforts
Since the conflict in Ukraine erupted in 2014, thousands of civilians have been killed and more than 1.5 million people have been forced to flee their homes. Women activists play an important role in providing humanitarian assistance on the ground, yet their voices have been largely excluded from the formal peace process.
At the same time, the austerity measures implemented in the country have had a disproportionate effect on women and deepened gender inequalities, making it even harder for women to participate in Ukraine’s peace efforts.
WILPF has worked with Ukrainian women activists since the conflict began. We call attention to the obstacles that they are facing. By conducting visits with local women’s organisations, we can get a better understanding of their situation and ensure that their analysis is considered by the international community.
As a global organisation, we also provide spaces for Ukrainian activists to engage in a dialogue with women who have lived through conflicts in other parts of the world, learn from their experiences, and find new ways to build peace in their own communities.
