SUMMARY:70 Years is Enough: Transnational Feminist Movement to End the Korean War
DESCRIPTION:**Please note that as of 2 March\, due to concerns about the spread of COVID-19\, all CSW64 parallel events have been cancelled** \nOverview \n2020 marks the 70th anniversary of the start of the Korean War. The unresolved status of the Korean War is the driving force fueling distrust\, tension and militarism on the Korean peninsula. It is the stated reason for North Korea’s nuclear buildup\, for the U.S. refusing to sign the Mine Ban Treaty\, and the obstacle to the success of diplomatic initiatives such as verifiable denuclearization and engagement on human rights. \nKorea Peace Now! Women Mobilizing to End the War\, a global campaign to end the Korean War with a peace agreement\, was launched during the CSW63 last year\, and has been actively doing the campaign in the US\, the UN\, Korea and around the world. As the United States’ “forgotten war” turns 70 this year\, the transnational feminist campaign Korea Peace Now! is calling for a Korea peace agreement and women’s leadership in the peace process. \nSpeakers from South Korea\, United States and Canada will provide an update on the transnational campaign and strategies women peacebuilders are using to advance peace in South Korea\, the United States\, at the UN\, and in key countries. The speakers will provide analysis on the impasse in the peace process and strategies for how the global women’s peace movements can support efforts to end sanctions harming North Korean people and the 70-year Korean War. \nSpeakers: \n\n\n\nLiz Bernstein\, Nobel Women’s Initiative (Moderator).\nChristine Ahn\, Women Cross DMZ.\nCho Young-mi\, Korean Women’s Movement for Peace.\nKo You-Kyoung\, Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom.\nJody Williams\, Nobel Peace Prize Laureate\, Nobel Women’s Initiative.
