SUMMARY:A Climate of Insecurity for COP27–The Impact of the Climate Crisis on Women\, Peace\, and Security in the MENA Region
DESCRIPTION:**L’interprétation sera disponible en français**** الترجمة ستكون متاحة باللغة العربية** \n\n\n\nJoin us in our last webinar in the series “A Climate of Insecurity for COP27” on Thursday\, 27 October at 7PM CEST\, where we will shed light on the myriad impacts of the climate crisis in the MENA region. Speakers will illuminate different impacts of the climate crisis on women under militarised regimes and in conflict areas\, and they will sketch out grassroots solutions\, and share their key demands for COP27 and beyond. \n\n\n\nBackground:\n\n\n\nThe MENA region is among the most vulnerable places in the world to climate change. The devastating toll that climate change has on the region isn’t only influencing water supplies and food production systems\, but will also heighten insecurity\, complicate existing conflicts\, and create breeding grounds for violent extremism. As climate change is widely and increasingly recognised to contribute to heightened fragility\, women in the MENA region are especially vulnerable to its impacts. Women in the region already suffer major human rights violations under authoritarian regimes\, as well as in conflict zones where they are disproportionately impacted by insecurity\, displacement\, poverty\, and sexual violence. \n\n\n\nThe climate crisis is further exacerbating and complicating these impacts\, and is creating a fertile ground for the emergence of further conflicts. This means women at the grassroots in the region – being those most affected – are uniquely positioned to contribute to sustainable natural resource management\, climate-resilient communities\, and enhanced peace and stability. For policymakers and practitioners\, promoting women’s contributions can accelerate gains across peace\, conservation\, and sustainability. \n\n\n\nModerator: Salma Kahale\, WILPF MENA Director \n\n\n\nOpening remarks: Hanan Awwad\, MENA Representative and President of WILPF Palestine \n\n\n\nPanelists:– Nouha Ghosseini\, President\, WILPF Lebanon– Rula Assad\, Syrian Female Journalist Network– Shirine Al Jurdi\, WILPF Lebanon– Dr. Nadia Al Sakkaf: Independent Yemeni researcher and Director of Research at Arabia Brain Trust \n\n\n\nRegister: \n\n\n\nمناخ من انعدام الأمن تحضيراً لمؤتمر الأمم المتحدة المعني بتغيّر المناخ (COP 27): تأثير أزمة المناخ على النساء والسلام والأمن \n\n\n\nفي منطقة الشرق الأوسط وشمال إفريقيا \n\n\n\nانضم/ي إلينا في الويبينار الأخير في سلسلة “مناخ من انعدام الأمن تحضيراً لمؤتمر الأمم المتحدة المعني بتغير المناخ (COP 27)” يوم الخميس ٢٧ أكتوبر في تمام الساعة ٧ مساءً بتوقيت وسط أوروبا الصيفي، حيث سنسلط الضوء على الآثار العديدة لأزمة المناخ في منطقة الشرق الأوسط وشمال إفريقيا.

SUMMARY:Las mujeres avanzamos y seguimos en el camino de la paz: Side event to commemorate the 22nd anniversary of UNSCR 1325
DESCRIPTION:This event will reflect on the past\, present\, and future of the Women\, Peace and Security Agenda in Colombia\, including the opportunities and challenges for developing a 1325 National Action Plan as well as the gaps in the implementation of the Final Agreement between the government and the FARC-EP.  \n\n\n\nThe newly-elected Colombian government has announced that it will be convening consultations with women’s movement leaders to develop a 1325 National Action Plan. Women leaders have been calling for government-wide implementation of the WPS agenda in order to address the different issues and conflicts facing the country\, including those outside of the scope of the Final Agreement.  \n\n\n\nWith this backdrop\, panelists will discuss how a National Action Plan\, if grounded in an intersectional feminist understanding of human security\, could present an opportunity to holistically address these intersecting challenges. In addition\, they will present locally-rooted analysis on the concrete barriers to implementation of the gender provisions of the peace agreement and the reincorporation process.  \n\n\n\nThis event is co-hosted by WILPF’s National Section\, LIMPAL Colombia\, which has been working for feminist peace in the country for over 20 years\, and WILPF’s Women\, Peace and Security Programme\, based in New York. \n\n\n\nPanelists include:\n\n\n\nDiana Salcedo López – Director of WILPF in Colombia\, and national representative of the Special Instance on Gender in follow-up to the implementation of the peace agreement.  \n\n\n\nNatalia Chaves Monroy – Coordinator of the Women\, Peace and Security Program in the WILPF section in Colombia\, and coordinator of the follow-up report to the peace agreement.  \n\n\n\nManuela Marín – Signatory of the peace agreement\, representative in the Commission for the Follow-up\, Promotion and Verification of the Implementation of the Final Agreement. \n\n\n\n\nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZAofuChrz4uH9B2enyG634zYd0NQOrVKm1G

But what do these promises really mean? Will they be enough to mitigate the devastating effects of the ecological crisis? And how have feminist\, anti-militarist perspectives featured in this year’s much anticipated COP? Speakers who attended the climate summit in Scotland from WILPF Sections as well as from CODEPINK will assess outcomes of COP in a public webinar on Sunday\, 21 November. Join the conversation online and learn from women activists about the steps that are required for building a world based on climate justice\, gender equality and feminist peace. Let’s discuss ways we can mobilize women to put peace & equality at the centre of climate justice in advance of COP 27 in Egypt next year.
