By endorsing the Treaty, WILPF joins more than 350,000 individuals, 1,300 organisations, 3,000 scientists, 100 Nobel Laureates, and 69 cities and subnational governments in a global call for a treaty to ensure a quick and effective shift away from the use of coal, oil, and gas and towards a safe, healthy, and sustainable future.
According to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), coal, oil, and gas – collectively known as fossil fuels – are responsible for 75 per cent of all current carbon dioxide emissions. Through their extraction, production, and use, they are the leading cause of climate change and environmental destruction, and contribute significantly to the perpetuation of insecurity and conflict through their central role in the military-industrial complex.
WILPF’s endorsement of the Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty is a critical step in our work on environmental justice, which is uniquely focused on the impacts of militarism and militarised security on the climate crisis. We strongly believe that a treaty to end fossil fuel production can play an important role in disrupting the current lifeblood of militarised security.
