WILPF welcomes the award of the Nobel Peace Prize 2019 to Abiy Ahmed Ali “for his efforts to achieve peace and international cooperation, and in particular for his decisive initiative to resolve the border conflict with neighbouring Eritrea.”
His nonviolent approach to put an end to two decades of conflict between the two east-African neighbours is commendable as it falls in line with WILPF’s vision to use nonviolent methods to build sustainable peace.
The brief period of his peace intervention is also a clear indication that it is all about one’s determination and strong engagement and not about the time spent in a position.
May his actions expand to the whole African continent and help sort out numerous crises and conflicts rocking the continent. African women are ready to support his work towards achieving sustainable and we do hope he ensures women play a key role in peace-building initiative.
