The Women, Peace and Security (WPS) Agenda is a powerful tool for promoting a gender perspective on all aspects of peace and security worldwide. It makes both global and local actors responsible for ensuring women’s participation, protection and rights throughout the conflict cycle. But promises are not enough. Commitments must be turned into action.
Localising the WPS Agenda is about identifying how it can be and needs to be, implemented at the local level. And making it happen. By providing resources, strengthening grassroots advocacy and making concrete efforts in local communities, WILPF puts theory into practice. We make sure words on paper are translated into action on the ground.
Through our advocacy, we urge governments to adopt National Action Plans for implementing the UN Security Council resolution 1325. We then monitor how these plans are implemented. And taking it one step further, we collaborate with local partners to strengthen local ownership and place the power to implement the WPS Agenda in the hands of those most affected.
