In this statement, we will address concerns raised by WILPF DRC in the context of the Universal Periodic Review (UPR), including in its individual report submitted for the 33rd Session of the Working Group. WILPF welcomes the support of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) for recommendations 119.189, 119.209 and 119.213 calling for the adoption of specific legislation criminalising domestic violence and marital rape. Measures must also be taken to ensure that women victims of domestic violence have effective access to justice, including protection against threats from their spouses or families, as well as psychosocial and medical assistance. Moreover, there is an urgent need to raise public awareness to end the normalisation of these forms of violence.
